Alumninized Coils and Sheets

There are two types of aluminized steel depending on the purity of its coating.

Type 1 aluminized steel has a coating that’s around 5-11% silicon. Metallurgists usually use this in equipment that requires extreme heat resistance, like cooking and heating.

Meanwhile, type 2 aluminized steel has a pure aluminum coating, which is often thicker than type 1’s coating. Manufacturers usually use this in cladding and jacketing over insulation.

Aluminized steel is carbon steel coated with an aluminum-silicon alloy through hot-dipping, creating a strong metallurgical bond that combines the best characteristics of both materials. It retains steel’s strength and aluminum’s surface benefits, and is formable enough to bend, fold, and roll without breaking. Notable properties include:

  • High Temperature Resistance: Resists up to 900° F, surpassing galvanized steel’s 392° F limit.
  • Low Thermal Expansion Coefficient: Less prone to deformation under heat compared to stainless steel.
  • Corrosion Resistance: More resistant than both base materials due to a protective aluminum oxide layer.

Aluminized steel is a cost-effective, durable choice that has quickly become preferred in various industries.

Aluminized steel is commonly used in applications involving high temperatures and corrosion resistance.

Its resistance to high temperatures makes it ideal for incinerators, ovens, heaters, kitchen ranges, and barbeque burners. Additionally, the aluminum-silicon coating doesn’t rust or affect the flavor of food, making it sanitary for cooking ware like baking pans and pots.

Its resistance to corrosion, meanwhile, makes it great for HVAC components and pipes in industrial facilities that carry corrosive liquids.

Aluminum and steel are excellent manufacturing materials. However, they have their drawbacks; carbon steel lacks the chromium needed to prevent rust, and pure aluminum is weaker than steel. Aluminized steel is made by coating cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel with an aluminum-silicon alloy. The steel substrate is cleaned and then dipped in a molten aluminum-silicon bath which forms a protective layer. This coating enhances the steel’s corrosion and heat resistance.
