Frequently Asked Questions

We’re here to help
Where do you source your steel? Who do you buy from?

We have supplier relationships with a variety of domestic steel mills. We also operate within a network of Steel Service Centers that are trading partners, almost like a buying cooperative. This approach gives us access to hard to find items as well as consistent sourcing via our purchasing contracts with major producers.

How long are your lead times from the mill?

Lead times on material we order from the producing steel mills vary based on economic conditions. There are times when supply is strong and orders are light. In those cases, material can be shipped to us in a matter of days. However, the steel mills have been known to adjust production capacity, tightening markets, and pushing out lead times.
When that occurs, it’s possible to wait 4-10 weeks for delivery. Hascall Steel prides itself in FORECASTING these situations, and acting in ADVANCE of shortages/delays so that your supply source remains consistent.

What specs of steel do you have?

We list a full spectrum of steel specifications on our Steel Services page.

All of the common grades are always available, and our sales associates are ready and willing to discuss the more unusual specifications that may be required. Our relationships with our vendors give us quick and easy access to the hard to source materials.

How long does your process take?

From quote, to accepted customer purchase order, to material selection, processing, packaging, and delivery CAN BE as short as 4 hours. But it’s not always about speed.

We serve you better when we fully understand your steel uses, your volumes, your customer’s requirements. When we partner with you and your projects, the process moves from “how long” into “how well”! Yes, we can get steel to you quickly, but our greater goal is to get steel to you consistently, and share with you our expertise in material application.

What are your delivery and lead times?

Each order has its own unique circumstances that affect delivery and lead time. However, having said that, on AVERAGE, we are able to take an order, produce it on a day or two. Of course there are times when we can have steel to a customer next day, but as with anything, good planning and communication will lead to customer satisfaction and on time deliveries.

What is Hascall good at?

We’ve been in the steel service center industry since 1971. Along the way we pride ourselves in those PARTNERSHIPS with customers where we together address steel sourcing options, seeking economy and consistency for both parties. Most of our team have been with us over 15 years. That makes us EXPERTS in sourcing materials, processing them, and getting your order to you quickly.

Do you have your own fleet?

We operate a dedicated fleet of over 18 semi-tractor/trailers and straight trucks. This gives us much greater flexibility and control over delivery schedules. It also allows us to be very nimble and responsive to customer requests and changes that arise throughout the day.

Can my steel really be delivered in 24-48 hours?

We run production around the clock for just such circumstances.

Everyone appreciates sufficient lead times and forecasted planning, however there are times and situations where urgency is needed.

What does ISO mean and what does it mean for your Steel Service Center to be Certified?

ISO, stands for International Standards Organization, and they are a governing body that publishes quality standards. Hascall Steel has adopted the ISO: 9000/2015 standard for its internal quality system. The certification process involves a third party auditing firm that frequently visits our facilities, reviewing our quality systems and continuous improvements, and issues our certificate of compliance to the ISO Standard.

Are you EDI Compliant? (What does this mean?)

For those customers who prefer to communicate via EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), we make use of third party translators. Thus, forecasts and advance shipment notifications can be sent and received between your company and Hascall Steel.

Do you process customer material?

Yes, there are unique production services that we can perform on our customer’s material. However, we prefer to supply your requested material, slit/blanked to size. We find it to be in everyone’s best interest for cost containment and production efficiency.

Can you/how do you package for overseas shipping?

Shipments overseas are rare, but when our customer has these requests, we are able to accommodate. Typically, the material is protected with a full vapor barrier wrap to protect against salt air. This step, along with quality containerized box units, gives adequate protection for the transit across oceans.

What are your hours of shipping?

Our Grand Rapids location is open M-F 24 hours. Our other facilities operate from 6am until mid-afternoon. However we are open to make special arrangements.

How can I get my “Certs”?

Steel “Certs” or certification documents are available for every order.

We provide abbreviated certification information on each and every shipper.

Your Sales Associate can help you obtain more thorough information.

STEEL ORDERING PROCESS
OUR ORDERING PROCESS: HOW BEST TO ORDER STEEL FROM US...

At Hascall Steel we understand that part of being an expert is being able to tailor steel to your needs. With that in mind there are some key areas that will help us fulfill your steel order in a way that is best suited to your company’s capacities. By working with our sales team, we can adjust several aspects of your order to make things easier for your team members. Next are some areas to keep in mind that can improve efficiency and quality.

1. MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

Often customers place an order with the following basic information: Quantity/Gauge/Width/Length/Steel Type…

However there are quite a few QUALIFIERS that will help us all get the best value from the informational exchange.

2. TOLERANCES

When discussing material with our Sales Team, be sure to include tolerances for your gauge, width, and length (if applicable). In some cases, Hascall can meet tolerances as low as +/-.001 on gauge, +/-.003 on width, and +/-.015 on length. Specifications – Many steel specifications come with sub categories that can alter chemistries and mechanical boundaries. Be sure to have the full specification when ordering or talk with your sales representative to discuss options.

3. PACKAGING

Proper packaging can help reduce unloading and production time. ID – We offer ID sizes in 16”, 20”, and 24” OD – We are able to provide OD sizes up to 72” Skidding – Standard or custom skidding available, just let us know how you would like your material skidded to best meet your equipment needs.
Paper – Protective paper is standard on all orders but can be applied with standard or full wrapping both with and without Hascall Logos. Max Coil and Skid Weight – Coils can be adjusted to meet your max lift and coil capacities.
Offloading – Material can be shipped skidded or standing and set for Forklift on the side or the rear of the bed. Material can also be shipped ready for sheet lifter or overhead crane offload.

4. DELIVERY

Steel is only good if it gets there when you need it. At Hascall we have an experienced Logistics team that will ensure that your steel arrives on time in the way that best suits your needs. Whether you would like delivery via our in-house Steel Man Transportation service or if you would like to pick up your material personally, our team can set up appointments that meet your schedule. Our Logistics team can also arrange a 3rd party carrier if needed. Delivery dates, times, and address should be discussed with your Sales Representative prior to ordering.

5. THE UNKNOWN

And lastly, we know each customer is unique. There may be special requests that we would love to accommodate. These may range from a sample of the steel attached to the packaging, to increased tag requirements and frequencies. We are happy to work with you in order to be your trusted choice in slit steel coil and blanks.
